How about an old appliance cord, some 10-gauge Romex, and an old USB cable? Most anything along these lines, and in a variety of sizes, should work.

Fresh off the printer and going into the mail trmw to Ed -- I used the thingiverse junk pile.. reduce the files to 37% .. that gives you a 36" nscale barrel height .. about 24" wide .. that ratio gives a good scale down to the rest of the "junk"

I built these scrap loads from actual N scale scrap. 


Bits of sprue, those 1015 shims that no one ever uses, broken Rapido couplers, parts of old side frames, and coupler springs.  Odds and ends from the junk box.  Give them a coat of rusty red and some grimy black, and you're off to the races.  Plus you can clean out your junk box.

Old Mehano shells can be cut up and put to good use as well.
