I recently bought SD40-2 (early) from Kato in Burlington Northern, to me, the green walkway looks wrong or is this prototypical?

They were originally painted black, but on some units the non slip paint weathered away.
It depends on your era/level of weathering.

Here's a nice clean shot of sister unit 6357 (ex C&S 909, delivered one month after 6333) clearly showing black.
