PC H12-44?
« on: May 07, 2020, 03:04:13 AM »

I have a few H12-44 shells I picked up long ago. I would like to paint them into PC and drop them on a more modern mechanism to run with a few Arnold U25C engines that I bought when they were being blown out.

But I can't locate any photos of an H12-44 painted in PC. Were these aver repainted? Or at least receive a paint-out? Or were they always in their former PRR or NYC paint until retired (which I imagine was pretty early).

Are you looking for an H12-44 or an H16-44?

NYCS had twenty seven of the H-12-44 yard switchers.

They showed up on the property between December, 1950 and July, 1952.

9111-scarap March, 1966
9112 and 13-traded in to GE May, 1967
9114-did make it to PC, but was quickly traded in to EMD.
9115-was traded in to GE in May, 1967.
9116-made it to PC
9117-yanked August, 1967, scapr October 1967.
9118-made it to PC
9119-traded in to GE May, 1967
9120-made it to PC
9121 and 22-made it to PC, but quickly traded in to EMD.
9123 and 24-made it to PC
9125-traded in to GE, May, 1967
9126-made it to PC, but quickly traded in to EMD
9127-made it to PC
9128-yanked August, 1967, scrap December, 1967.
9129-made it to PC
9130-Yanked, December, 1967; scrap February, 1968 (PC started 1 February, 1968)
9131 and 32-made it to PC
9133-yanked, December, 1967, scrap February, 1968
9134 and 35-made it to PC
9136-made it to PC, buy yanked July, 1968
9137-made it to PC, but quickly traded in to EMD.

The NYCS designation was DES-17; the PC, FS-12; those modified carried the "m" letter.

In 1966, all were re-numbered from 8300.  9111 was to be 8300, but NYCS scrapped it before it could receive its new number.  9112 was designated 8301; the numbers went up from there in order.  FM delivered all of them with MU connexions.  Unlike any other NYCS yard switcher, they came in lightning stripes.  The stripe began on the hood right where it met the cab.  The zig-zag was toward the end.  It did not go around the cab oor onto the other end.

I do not know about the Penn's or NYNH7H's,  or even if the Penn or NYNH&H  had any.  I do not know what they looked like under PC.  I would guess that most of them were repainted "Cigar Band" in the last days of NYCS.  Some of the numbers of the scrapped FMs were later assigned to NYCS Baldwin S-12s.  I never have seen a photograph of an FM h-12-44 in PC paint.  I am guessing that they did not last longon PC.

The PRR had 16 units numbered 8708–8723 and were renumberd to Penn Central 8327–8342 according to Wikipedia,

I was unable to find any PC H12044 images in any of these road numbers.

I have two fresh Trix PC shells if you want to trade.

None of the PC predecessors had the later phase H12-44 with the short carbody like the Minitrix model

Isn't this one? I'm no FM expert, but it looks like the Trix model to me.

PRR 8708 is a Phase 3 unit built between 1953 and 1955.  They are so boxy that they look shorter than they are.  The other "spotting difference" is that the Phase IV unit raised walkway at the cab end is shorter, and has 2 sets of louvers instead of 4.

The "short" phase 4 and 4A units were SP, ATSF, B&O, NKP, Chihuahua al Pacifico and a coal company called Ayshire Collieries. I don't know if any were built by CLC in Canada.

Posting that is sort of shooting myself in the foot, as I also have one of those Minitrix PC shells in my "sell or trade" box.

I gave up rivet counting when I couldn't see an N scale rivet anymore.

It makes a good sales pitch if a second H-12-44 shell can be used for the extra 3'...

I'll defer to one of our resident MILW modelers re: the extent this can or can't be done.

Milwaukee modelers use these-

I recall a forum discussion regarding the trix shells , I'll look for it. All I know is that the trix shell is not useful for Milw modelers.

I would buy several of these in multiple roads if someone would produce them!
