Huh, even back in the 60s they were putting essentially empty flatcars at the front of Horseshoe bound consists.

It's really only an issue if you're going to do a lot of heavy dynamic braking.  In the 60s dynamic weren't very powerful and not used much.  At that time stretch braking was king and with the helpers pushing on the rear the chances of stringlining, even at low speeds were greatly reduced.

Right, and on some roads, that was the main reason for the helpers, rather than simply putting the power on  the front.  Today's "distributed power" does the same thing.
