UP on the BNSF ???

Good afternoon,

So I was in Chillicothe, Illinois on the old Santa Fe transcon this afternoon around 2 PM central time.  Two of the passing trains exclusively had UP power (3 - 4 units each train) not BNSF units.  Perhaps I'm not current on run thru agreements anymore.  What's going on?  This is East of Edelstein Hill in the Illinois River valley.

Thank you,
Bobster

Could be a run through, a reroute, a regular train that just so happens to have UP power. Who knows but nothing out of the ordinary in this day and age.

I figured as much but since I am a long way from home on this I figured someone local might have a response.   I even saw a Chicago and Northwestern Auto rack on the UP auto-rack train.  I can't remember if it was the westbound or the eastbound train. I want to say westbound.  I saw two UP powered trains and seven BNSF trains. between 1:30 and 2:30 pm yesterday, Friday the 13th.   After that nothing for about 30 minutes. I left because I had other things I needed to take care of.

Back home Sunday,

Those were Global 4 trains you saw. They run from Kansas City to Global 4 (outside of Joliet) on BNSF trackage rights with UP crews.

Autorack cars can be used by any RR on any RR as they are "pooled".

Thanks all,

For bringing me up to date.  I knew CNW had been gobbled up by UP, I was just a bit surprised to see the logo on a new looking autorack.  I knew UP and BNSF had a connection in the northwest corner of their crossover just west of Edelstein.  That's why I was a little surprised in Chillicothe to see UP at the bottom of the hill.

I found an original Santa Fe pin for my hat and a 1990 Illinois Division hat from a retired gentleman's collection. I also picket up a spike near the site of the old Edelstein station.    For all the rail history of Chillicothe and the former North Chillicothe, Illinois I would have expected to see a bit more Rock Island RR and Santa Fe RR history in the local Antique shops.  By the way North Chillicothe was pretty much a Santa Fe town in the steam era until eventually being annexed by Chillicothe.

For trainwatchers the grassy hillside on Houlihan's Curve has been fenced off.  I watched from between the new main and the old main accross from the current office, possibly near the original station site that was between the mains.

The brick station I knew as a child, Santa Fe then Amtrak, once the clubhouse, is in bad shape, broken windows and falling apart.   The road to where the round house was many years ago is  marked as "no trespassing police authorized to arrest."   I did not feel like testing this out.  The area where the roundhouse was is a grassy field - no trees.   I could only see a bit of where the large yard was just west of the station.  The gravel pits no longer appear active - conveyors are gone - and part of one pit is now a lake surrounded by a campground.

All for now,
Bobster
