Hmmm.  Tempting.  All the electronicals are housed in the tender are they not?  If I were to swap one of the slope back tenders with all wheel pick up and not much else, would it function without DCC?

I had my eye on the Bmann 4-6-0s at MBK for quite a while (N&W had a handful still around at the beginning of the 50s) but then I saw how Chris fixed the ride height on his (his looks great!) ... I decided it was too much work for a peripheral model.

Ahahahahahahah. Amen brother. So I've got one for my Ma & Pa daliance and after looking at the work required there I decided to skip the lowering. Then I lost the screw that holds the boiler on and I decided that I'll go work on something else for a little while before coming back to it.

Yes, the brains are in the tender. Which, when replaced with a slope back tender's frame, can then be used for this...

As a matter of curiosity (and maybe the beginning of another project I will never finish), what is the driver diameter on this loco?

I have the 4-6-0 as driver tire dia .365" or roughly 58" N scale.  With flanges it's .412" or 63" N scale.

You still would have to deal with the wires that go into and out of the motor and from the locomotive wheels.  I had one that fried its decoder, so I just affixed the wires to the pins in the tender.  The same thing happened to a mogul.  I do not use DCC.  Once you get the decoders out of the things, they creep VERY nicely on DC.

I also have the trainset version of the ten wheeler.  I swapped out the USRA standard for a USRA switcher tender.  It actually performed poorly so I had to go back to the USRA standard.

Right on.  $200 for the same engine with a decoder in it.  How's about they put that extra cost into improving the model, like giving it see-through spokes on the drivers .    I was never able to get the old ones quite so sheap as $45... more like $65... but still, you are right.
