pennsy Q2 4-4-6-4

These were put out in the 90's I believe but i could be wrong. I bid on one a year ago. Had a Soundtraxx decoder installed. lost it by $10.   Has anyone ever seen one or have one or know of one to be purchased and are they really worth the big doe asked for them ?  How is the running ?
I had the S1 but even with 19.5 rad curves it would make a slight fuss and just didn't run very well nor pull like the T1 does. I sold it.    The BLI T1 took it's place for me.

I’ve got two. One runs like a Swiss watch, and one is a basket case. The joys of brass. It will operate fine down to 15”, but it will climb right off the tracks at 14.99”.

From what you said it kind of hit or miss with them, brass indeed.
Thank you,

Here's a bunch of photos I made of a N scale Key Pennsy Q2 4-4-6-4.  Bought it at a N Scale Convention back about 10 years ago at the auction..... sold it later on....:

eric220 is right on, this loco ran almost fine for me (had annoying tendency to stall occasionally which is the reason I sold it),   anything less than 15 inches radius,
it would derail.

It was exquisite in detail.

That engine is from the late "last gasp" of N Scale brass.  The Key/Samhongsa stuff got really good then, with coreless motors and finer detail than the brass had, say, in the 1990s and earlier.   Look at Spookshow's reviews of other Key/Samhongsa steam from 2001 and later, and notice the trend of high scores and good performance.

The intermittent stalling is very common because the spring wire drawbar connection used on brass steam.  Spookshow even mentions this in his review of this engine.  But a hard-wiring across the drawbar will take care of that.

As for the 15" radius, I really must protest.  Good brass engines are made so the parts fit with close, more in-scale tolerances, so they look more prototypical.  And that means no more cheating and pretending a huge steam loco like this could run on anything like a scale 15" radius in real life.  I don't think it's even fair to knock the engine for requiring at least a 15" radius curve.

That is an excellent observation. A shame the brass market collapsed just when they learned how to build them right.
I’m sure the added costs had a lot to do with it. And yea, a loco like that has no business rolling on 15” curves...

We have o ne of those Q2’s and together with the PRR J1 and the NYC L4b this is one of the best brass steamers. Only modificatiess are a new drawbar and the addition of a decoder..
