Went over to Ft. Wayne yesterday to help out on 765. It's currently undergoing ultrasound testing as part the 1472 inspection process. Here's a shot of the engine without the jacket and sandbox. The tarp over the drivers helps keep debris from going into the motion work from the needle gunning on the boiler shell.


Today I worked on the wiring and hunted down shorts for the west end of my layout.

I am planning on doing an un-jacketed , and un-cladded loco as if it was being steam pressure tested . I my research the last month or so I have numerous grabs of the thickness checks of the boiler . They chalk a 4" x 4" grid all over the boiler , then check each square once with the method as you said . They then write the results in each square and move to the next square . Never knew this till a month ago .

@Ed Kapuscinski , the thought occurs since you model winter, are you planning on a partially iced-over river or does that river never freeze, even along the banks?  Don't think I've personally ever seen that modeled.

I searched the loco and found a U-tube video of one in operation when the first came out.

Same whistle. I don't know if they had a different one. Perhaps someone who knows the prototype can tell us.

Rick, I am confident that the sound programmed in your loco is correct, what I was saying is that the original N&W "hooter" sounds funny to me.   

I prefer the more soothing sound of a CNR or CPR multi chime whistle...

I've used wax paper over a dark blue-painted base. To model cracks you can use a straightedge or straight lines, and to model tire/snowmobile tracks you can distress it with various burnishers. I did a small pond with skaters and added skate tracks too.

This is an awesome idea.  This would really look unique as I haven't seen anyone model that before either.

Oh man, that Rand Hood article was serious business. I still remember reading it and being like "damn".

I don't know if I'm going to go frozen river. At this rate, I'll just be happy to get some water in it.

Although, looking at the weather for December of 85, it wasn't particularly frosty.
