Maybe your town needs to build an under/overpass?
We have one (and just one) for the east-west highway that dates to the late '50s. North-south highway, where the vehicular traffic is now, is at grade for NS. I'm on the civic committee trying to convince NS to cooperate with the state to change the location where they branch off the BNSF track shared through town that has an overpass for this road. Moving the junction a mile south would solve the problem with the 10 mph curve completely, but they will hear nothing of it, even with state money.
The problem is so bad that the CN DS will hold NS trains for as much as three hours because they choke the junction. I have to wonder about NS' motivation here - if they could move the trains across the diamond at 20 mph - BNSF's speed - the transit time would be cut in half, the CN DS wouldn't be so scared to let NS trains across, and so on. You see what I'm getting at here. Does NS
really have any interest to make the RR run better, or is there a reason they're letting crews die because of a single crossing they could fix with a simple realignment. Hmmm.
