Body-mounting Couplers on Atlas 2743 Thrall Gons

Has anyone tried body-mounting couplers on an Atlas N-scale 2743 Thrall gondola? It looks like MT 1015's won't clear the outboard axle without raising the car. Maybe MT 1023's?

I have one as well but have not looked into what it requires yet. I'll take a look at some of the couplers I have and  get back to you.

If there is room, lengthwise, the 1025 should work.  One suggestion is to use a 1/8" drill bit, spun by hand, to countersink the hole in the box, then use a flathead screw.  If the 1015s still come with flathead screws, one of those should work fine.

If MT would make a 1015 box as thin as the 1025s, it would look much better under cars.  There's no reason they can't.

Try a 1015 coupler in a 2004 box.  If the axil rubs the screw but clears the box, then attach it with Walthers Goo.  Thanks.

I ended up rolling my own. The 1023's were too long, and the 1015's too hight, so instead I used some rectangular brass tube and reused the Accumate couplers. I countersunk the flathead screw, and that allowed plenty of clearance between the coupler box and axle.

A 1015 coupler in a 2004 box also might fit without the screw hitting the axle.

Chris:  I've done the same thing, with both rectangular brass tube and fabricated plastic boxes, to make extended draft gear.  The Accumates work fine in makeshift housings.

Plus, it's cheaper than buying special MT couplers for the odd cars.

1-72 flathead instead of 00-90 might save some trouble
