For my anemic-pulling-power Berks, I did this:Buy a roll of thin Scotch double-sided tape (not the foam stuff; the thin stuff comes in a black and yellow dispenser and is sometimes called "photo mounting tape"). Tear off a 2" strip of the tape, and put it on a glassy flat surface - I've used everything from our polished granite kitchen counter to a Corelle dinner plate. Using a brand new #11 blade in a hobby knife and a metal straightedge, cut two strips from the long side of the tape that are about 1mm wide.Invert the loco. Put the end of one strip on one of the rear-most driver. Apply power at the lowest possible speed, and feed the tape around the driver. When you reach the starting point, stop, and use the tip of the #11 blade to cut the tape right at the overlap point. Do the same for the other driver. Put the loco on the track and slowly run it forward and backward for a few feet to "set" the tape.On my Berks, these "tape traction tires" increased pulling power from about 6 cars and a caboose to 30 cars and a caboose. The tape will NOT leave a residue on the track; instead, it will pick up dust and dirt from the track, which only seems to improve pulling power. After about 20 hours of running, the tape will wear through, and you'll need to replace it, but that's a 5-minute job. Honestly - this works. Try it.John C.
If you can still find them, why not just add a second TT wheel set? The new tender should be able to handle all pickup.
John,Is your traction tire installed in addition to the factory-installed tire? Over the existing tire or on another driver? Berk also had 3 driven axles where 4-4-0 has only 2.
I think John's referring to the Life-Like Berks, which have no tires, not the Bachman or Roco/Rivarossi Berks, which have 2 tires (in different places).George
My old versions of these locomotives pull not quite the same number of cars. Eight for the 2-6-0 locomotives and five cars for the 4-4-0 lokies. Nate Goodman
