I also agree that track gauges are critical to getting curves that are uniform enough to avoid trouble.
I used them on my curves too.

Even with track gauges, I have an 18" curve, which the track gauge will still fit into,
that the 2-10-4 could not make, no way no how.  The 4-8-4 would just force its way through, but it was
clearly binding.
The 18-3/4" and broader - all fine.  Just the 18" was a problem.

All I'm saying is that there are variations in trackwork, and in the engines themselves, and those two are probably
at the hairy edge of making it through an 18" curve.  So I would not design a layout with 18" curves if
I were going to use those two engines.  Give yourself some breathing room for imperfection.

All of this is a moot point, and a big thread drift anyway   :D
The L-4b is apparently nothing like those other Hallmark engines in its ability to tolerate curves.

Does anyone have a decoder in their Mohawk l4-b.  How hard of a job is it to do in a Key steamer?  I just picked one up at a train show in Syracuse.   Thanks  Craig

What kind of a decoder are you planning on installing? If you just want motor control, a TCS Z2 or similar can be installed under the boiler shell. Then it is just a matter of separating the wires between the drawbar, motor, and frame and splicing in the decoder.
