After an incredibly short 9 month restoration, Norfolk & Western class J 4-8-4 #611 is back on the road! They are currently doing test and shakedown runs, and will begin excursions next month.

When I searched I could only find the time not the place yet. It is running from Ytown to Ashtabula fan trip. It is ran by NS so I doubt it would be the B&O station.

What a beautifull machine !!!! The Big Boy will be something to see back in action but 611 is so much "sexier" and classy with the bullet nose , shiny paint , the nice marroon and gold stripes . The whistle is like a Barry White song !

Not that I miss them but anybody knows why it's possible to run her without the ditch lights ?

I couldn't tell from the video clips... were the markers on, with the historic "extra" white lenses? I asked Steve Lee (retired UP Heritage manager) the same question several years ago, and he responded that the FRA isn't completely heartless, telling him that their interpretation of the forward-facing lights rules could be bent enough to have traditional markers meet the requirement.

a light issue has caught my attention.

when Diesels were new there were complaints that they were too quiet
and that something should be done...

that left me wondering about how much noise a steam engine made.
I have never thought a diesel was quiet.

I have read that steam was a lotta kinds of attention grabbing.
chuf, whistle, clanging and ground shaking...

If the rule for ditch lights was intended to get more attention...
 then I think a steam engine should get an exception.

My older brother missed the steam locos - he said they were quieter than the diesels N&W used to replace them (GP9s and RS11s).

This in the yard in Williamson, WV.
