sad, but not surprised.  NASA's budget has been getting the same squeeze most other federal agencies that do science have been getting, and the railroad has been run by contractors using NASA equipment for several years now anyway.

Interestingly, its the NASA Railroad that got me into model railroading - sort of.  My Uncle ran the railroad until 1996, and he models the EBT in HOn3.  He's quoted here (http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/flyout/railroad.html)  and you can see him in this video: 

He's now working on a line of HO Brass ACW locomotives:
