Simple question (maybe)

I'm working on my small fleet of SD-9s.Two of them are done except for couplers for which I am planning to use MTL 1015s.One SD-9 is a halfbreed ATLAS-KATO and ATLAS China. The other two are pure China products. These are the two I am asking about. All three are on SD35 chassis with Digitrax decoders.

My simple question is do I need to shim the couplers and if I do up or down?

Catt. The best way to set these up it to use a Micro Trains coupler and trip pin gauge. It has multiple uses and is ideal for checking all of the coupler heights as it has a coupler mounted on one end, a car height gauge on the other plus a track and wheel gauge.
Set the loco on the track along with the gauge and you will straight away see which way you need to adjust.
Trust this helps.

SantaFeGuy has the best idea, but if you don't have the gauge, a MT truck with coupler, preferably the short extension (standard) freight truck, will work almost as well.  Since there are only two ways to mount the coupler, choose the one that puts it at the same height as the one on the truck.

All three are on SD35 chassis with Digitrax decoders...

PArdon me for a moment... Huh?  Do the Sd9 bodies fit the SD35 gts?  If so, I just found a solution for two 35s I have sitting around that no one wants... rebody them.
Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.

ATLAS China SD-9 shell from Sooo Much Stuff on Ebay,ATLAS SD35 chassis with Digitrax decoder that I've had what now seems like forever.

This one is a ATLAS KATO shell also on a SD35 chassis.

The chassis looked like it would fit so I tried it.I may be wrong but I think ATLAS now uses this chassis because of the low nose SD24 and 26 .Aside from that the SD7/9 are two of my favorite locos, and my SD35 shells were worth nothing more than target practice with my airbrush.

Fuel tank is wrong for SD-7/9's. Should be two separate fuel tanks (or one tank for fuel and one tank for water is steam generator equipped or just one tank and a gap as the SP SD-7 had when they didn't have the steam generator).

Fuel tanks are correct as these are rebuilds  not repaints. Larger fuel tanks were wanted and the air tanks are now internal.

Sorry: Fuel tanks are wrong for most SD-7/9 units except specific rebuilt units. I learn something new all of the time!

Montana Rail Link had some SD-19s (SD-9 rebuilds ) that had I believe either GP35 or GP38 tanks.Been so long since I've seen pics I don't remember which one was used.

Of course not all SD-9 rebuilds had different tanks installed.
