Southern Railway Bay Window Caboose Question

Decades ago, I knew the answer to this question, but I've since forgotten:

Why did some Southern Bay window cabooses (usually all red) have a yellow bay? I'll sit back and wait for the replies to come rolling in...

Kitsatchie, did you ever find a closely accurate model to build the Southern bay windw caboose you wanted to build?

Alas, no. The closest thing out there is Athearn's Southern bay window caboose. Try to find one (or 5, like I'd want to get).

Maybe now that Paul Graf is CEO of Atlas, he'll try to buy Athearn from Horizon Hobby and rerun the Southern caboose.

I have a Model Power CN caboose that I hope to eventually kitbash with a Gold Metal Models detail kit to make a current Norfolk Southern yard caboose.  They did a poor job of painting over the Southern markings on some of them.   In fact I saw one at the Roanoke Shops in August in fresh NS paint.
