Updates from Weathering Solutions

I received some new photos from Joe at Weathering Solutions (http://www.weatheringsolutions.com/) and wanted to share them with you.

He is sourcing new decal paper which is extremely thin. Less than 20um. The photos below are of n-Scale freight cars with the decals applied and blended with washes. All the streaking, roof rust, rusty scrapes, damage rust and graffiti are decals. Then they are sealed and blended with either oil or acrylic washes. Prior to adding any decals, all fading of the base color is done and sealed. Then decals are added and sealed. Then the final washes are added. The extreme rust on the sides of the SP autorack is done with paint. The roof is decals.

Part of his team is a really good graphic artist who can nail the graffiti. He can get the look of graffiti with the fades, overspray and such. Look at the ICH graffiti on the GT autorack. It looks good. The colors are well blended without that sharp outline around each color you would get from silk screening. PLUS, the graffiti is printed on a white background first so you do not get that transparent look when applied to your models. The color stays true from the decal sheet to your model.









I am not affiliated with Weathering Solutions. I know Joe Steimann. I like what he is trying to do for the hobby. The quality of his decals is getting much better and he plans on a LOT more. If you have special cars or graffiti you want, drop him a line and see what he can do. The more information he has, the more he can produce. I am not good at reproducing rust streaks and scrapes and will definitely be using his products once I get to weathering my freight cars.

For modern modelers, Weathering Solutions had come up with a way for us to represent our era properly and get cars weathered quickly. I think Joe said it took him about 5 hours for the GT autorack from start to finish. Joe plans on producing quick YouTube videos also on how to use his product.

I've got some of these new thinner film decals at home - can't wait to try them.  I agree they seem like a great way to weather a fleet quickly, and I think once applied and sealed you could build up some of Tom Mann's oil-based weathering ideas to really make a few of these pop.

These look really nice and can add variety to weathering with other techniques.  It seems from the website the graffiti is only HO right now, hopefully that will change- some of it would look great.

Was he selling these at Trainfest or were they the older thicker ones?

If that ROCK hopper had an etched roofwalk it would be hard to tell it was a model. The rust and gouges are superb!

Thanks everybody for the positive comments!  We are diligently working on continuously updating  our product line while fulfilling orders. The decals at Trainfest were the 25 micron and we are in a holding pattern for anything thinner until the manufacturer does some testing.  This could take up to 6 months if at all because our personal testing on the thinner paper coupled with our ink was not compatible and did not meet our expectations.  With that said, we won’t produce what we can’t stand behind.   Model Railroader News and Model Railroad Craftsman showed interest in doing a new product review which we very much appreciate.  This is huge for us. 
We have several dealers now and more interested so word is getting out and people are really starting to grasp this idea. Our new products are announced through FACEBOOK under Weathering Solutions.  “Like us” on Facebook to stay up to date with what’s going on at W.S. and we’ll give you a free sample when you stop by our booth at either show.  We have two big shows coming up, the first is the Great Train Expo in Collinsville, IL on November 30th and December 1st and the Oklahoma City show on December 7th and 8th.  Please stop by our booth and say hi.
