I (like many veteran modelers) have used H&R from way back (I too still have some). What I never liked about it was that it was a vinyl or something impervious to the solvents I use in styrene construction, which is about 99% of what I work with on structure and other projects.

I have found that a light sanding takes away some of the "loafing" found on most V-F brick sheets.

The finest brick sheet I have ever seen was a small molded styrene sheet I got from a European company. It might have been Vollmer. The problem was, one light coat of paint pretty much did away with the brick pattern.

Were they small rectangles, about the size of a playing card? It's a British company that makes those, can't recall the name right now (I want to say Ratio Models, but I don't think it is). Wonderful detail, but a few issues. Like you say, the detailing is so delicate it gets lost easily under paint. Also, the sheets are rather thick, and the plastic is really strange, very hard to cut--scoring and snapping doesn't work, you have to saw it.

The scratchbuilder sheets that Ratio puts out are more like the size of a 4x6 index card. (perhaps even 5x7. I'm well enough versed in Ratio products, just never had a need to buy their scratchbuilders sheets.)

Slaters (also a UK company) puts out brick sheet, but I am not quite certain of the size.

Pretty sure it's the Ratio scratchbuilder line, then. I went to measure a sheet, but it looks as though I'm fresh out. I don't recall them being as large as 5 x 7.

I also have some much smaller cast resin brick sheets from someone (maybe Slaters?), and it's very fine, but the brick proportions are not those of common NA bricks--they're quite short.

EDIT: I just spent some time searching online for the Ratio scratchbuilder sheets, and frustratingly none of the online shops bother to indicate the size of the sheet! And Ratio does not appear to have their own website (they are "featured" in Peco's website, and even there they don't bother with builder sheet sizes). WTF?

I think he meant their brick sheets looks like cinder blocks. IMHO, their brick sheets look awful. DO NOT look at it under a magnifying glass.

They probably aren't 5x7, which is more of what the size of packaging car is.
The cast resin sheets you have aren't Slaters. Slater is the maker of "Plasticard" which is just the British way of saying Styrene.
IIRC, PECO owns Ratio, and they really do need to put some work into their site and make it more navigable.

One of the good things about the Timonium show (not the greenberg one) is that there is a dealer called "Railway Models" who sells Kestrel, Ratio, Slaters, and Metcalf products, and is knowledgeable about everything he sells. His prices are good too.

One thing he sells that seems to be a big seller is the lettering that Slaters makes, and he carries every size.
