Function Pads

My brief and uneducated knowledge of DCC decoders leads me to believe that there are areas on decoders that allow extra features. My main interest is adding a strobe/beacon function to a Kato RDC. I know that the installation of a decoder in a RDC is a task by itself but is do able. Is it true that I can add a strobe/beacon feature to most N scale locomotives using function pads.

You are correct .. The function pads on decoders are there to allow you to do such things as ditch lights, etc ..

Most of the available N Scale circuit board replacement decoders have solder pads to provide for additional functions. Check the documentation for each decoder for number and locations. Most documentation is available online so that an informed decision can be made before spending the $$.

Those pads are the negative connection for each function. The positive connection is shared by all of the functions. Also take a close look at the documention. TCS decoders allow for direct connection of LED's with no additional resistor. Their pads are also a little larger which makes the job easier.

Thanks Martin & John Im pretty psyched about getting into DCC knowing that you can do cool lighting effects like strobes, mars, ect. I cant wait I think after I tackle a couple of drop in decoders I'll work on something harder like a Kato RDC.
