Intermountain FT couplers vs Atlas freight car couplers

I recently picked up an FT set.  I have noticed that the engines refuse to couple with Atlas cars with the Accumate couplers.  No issues with any Micro-Train cars.  Is this a common issue or do I have an odd couple of freight cars or an odd engine?

Aren't there factory-installed MTL couplers on the InterMountain units?  I would try a little graphite on the MTL coupler, see if that helps.
