I don't use it, but I'm told you can create 3D models with the Google SketchUp application.

Yes, you certainly can. I did this with it:





Best of all, SketchUp is free. And it also has a gentle learning curve, assisted by a series of excellent videos.

How well do they render brick mortar detail?

I have a good number of Pennsy plans for small, basic buildings that would be even less complex than that, David...  Would be a great way to try Shapeways out!

Smaller towers, block stations, sheds, freight houses, track bumpers, coal trestles, all of these things could be made into a line of PRR-specific details/structures!

A PRR E44 for a six-axle Alco chasis is also a fantasy of mine; pantograph sold separately, of course!

I haven't gotten into brickwork with Shapeways. Lately I've been rendering brickwork for lasercutting. We burn acrylic to make masters, then cast the masters in resin. The results are pretty decent.

Yeah, but he wants an E44.  A couple of those come close enought for that.
