Chasing NYSW SU100 in Daylight

From late fall through early spring the NYSW sends a local crew with the SU100 train as far as Deposit NY. This is the old Erie main line to New Jersey. These early movements occur on Tuesdays and Thursdays only, as local crews are generally not available on Sundays.

On Tuesday March 15 I followed SU100, which left Binghamton around 2:15 PM. Because of our being on Daylight Savings Time the sun was fairly high in the sky yet, and the day was practically cloudless to boot.

Here we see the train at Kirkwood NY, south of Binghamton.

Top speed is about 25 MPH along this section of the Southern Tier, so it’s easy to catch up and pass the train for other photo locations. Assuming that school buses aren’t out on the highway, that is. Here SU100 (with the BH-1 crew) passes under at Great Bend PA.

I had plenty of time to set up in Susquehanna PA, and I caught it passing the station there.

The grade stiffens at this point, and despite 25MPH vehicular speed limits through Susquehanna and Lanesboro I beat the train to the east side of Starrucca Viaduct. The SD70M’s are beginning to smoke a bit!

Hallfway between Lanesboro and Gulf Summit NY. We are back in New York State at this point.

Approaching Gulf Summit:

Finally, the train is left at Deposit for the regular SU100 crew to take it overnight to New Jersey.

That was awesome.  It's so refreshing to not see any black Douche 9's in contemporary railfan shots.  Long live the Susie Q!

Fantastic shots of SU100 David, thank you for posting those. Did you notice if the NJT Comets are still at the other side of the station there in Susquehanna?

Chris, if I photoshopped a Berkshire into the photos, I'd also have to photoshop a second mainline track, and I don't know how to do that!

noblerot, three of the Comets are still there, but one has been scrapped down to floor level.

Somewhere in the stacks of stuff I have a shot of the tunnel motors still in SP garb... I had taken a trip up to Cortland for a conference and caught them at a grade crossing somewhere along the NY PA border...

Is there anything that doesn't look amazing or better in that paint scheme?

SD70 needs a new turbo I think.

Personally, I still like EMD's GP/SD standard cabs, so I noticed that the tunnel motors, with their standard cabs, are on each end of this consist, while the SD70Ms' wide cabs are buried in the middle.  Do the Susquehanna's road crews prefer the standard cabs or was this just a coincidence?

The SD70M's just returned to the NYSW after years on lease to other roads. They were not in good shape, and my guess is that the railroad wants to break them in again as they do maintenance and repairs. I have heard that occasionally one of them will be in the lead (the 4052 seems to be in better shape than the others.) Other than that I only know that crews seem to prefer certain standard cab units over others, but I don't know that they prefer standard cabs over wide noses. FWIW I understand that SD70M 4052 was the last unit on today's SU100 and should be the lead unit on Friday night's westbound.
