As far as the price of the auction - if someone is willing to pay $300 for this model, that's their business - it seems that maybe the collector market has shifted into this sub category - weathered and grimed up cars -

Indeed, if you pay attention to this market niche, you'd find that the price is hardly insane, in fact it's right in the ballpark. Weathering is an art that takes time, and those who are able to appreciate its worth will be willing to pay reasonable amounts of money for it, especially as each piece is truly one-of-a-kind.

Now, a hundred bucks for a box of ancient used trucks with Rapido couplers, that's insane.

Sorry Puds, but I think you are getting a little worked up about this. Someone stated they thought it was a lot of money to pay for something like that. No need to get wound up and take shots at people over it.

Group hug?

I agree that is a pile of hard currency for a rust bucket of a freight car... ;)

While I would never pay that much  for a rust bucket there are those that are happy to because they lack the needed weathering skills.

Until his passing there was a train show dealer that sold weathered cars from $20.00(light weathering)-99.00 (rust buckets)..He was a master at weathering and he knew it but,was always humble about his models and was happy others like his work enough to buy his weathered cars..

Reminds me of a guy years ago on the West Coast that started selling light kits (like Richmond Controls) for HO locos for the gryalights and what not. They worked off batteries and were easy to install. He did a few Athearn diesels to show the lights off and had more people wanting the locos. Didn't take him long to figure out it was easier to sell lighted locos with details for alot more money than his light kits.  ;)

Good to see Griff is still in circulation.  I saw a lot of his work, and got to chatter about things with him over on Scale Rails on Line when I was a regular there a couple years ago.  He did a good bit of weathering on the famous around the world Puddy car...

Those prices are making me think about selling off some of my half baked work!

Man, I thought I was on the Atlas Forum there for a minute, glad to see calmer heads prevailing.

Nice work though.

We have a gentleman in our N-trak club that has started weathering cars and putting them on E-bay. He can't believe himself what he gets out of them. He has had $3 swap meet cars go for $80-100 with an evenings worth of weathering and some MT trucks added to them. He doesn't set the price but he sure doesn't complain when a bidding war ensues. He told me recently there have been two or three guys that repeatedly bid on just about anything he puts out there, cars that he thinks are worth $30-40 go for close to $100.

I can see that I am in the wrong business.

SECOND CAR DONE IN THE NEW GRIME SHOP HERE IN MARYLAND!

Finally getting the shop and running here in our new home....this is the second car off the work bench.  To date, I have been letting cars go from my personal N scale collection that I mostly weathered during the long nights on deployment in Iraq.  This is the first car to be weathered completely for auction purposes since moving north.

hmmmm, active duty in Maryland ? are there any oil fields or dictators in Maryland ? but hey, I am only envious...   ;)

I dunno about the oil fields, but it would probably take armed insurrection to remove some of our "elected" officials... :)
