Thinning car sides

The Model Power coaches match a car I need spot on, but the overly thick car sides is a bit unpalatable. Is there any way anyone's tried to thin these car sides to get the glass closer to the exterior car surface. Perhaps machining?

Which coach?  The heavyweights?

Yes, the heavyweights. The heavyweight coach matches car #274's window pattern (bar one window that needs to be sealed) spot on. A little roof mod (much more actually, but let's talk basics) and... Voila! Still trying to figure out if the whole 9 car series was the same though.

The Model Power coaches are poor soft-relief copies of the Lima coaches, which is a model of the Pennsy P70.  It possible the original Lima body, with its more crisp detail, would be acceptable to you without thinning the back.

Otherwise, the only way that I can think of to do what you want would require three coach bodies.  Salvage the sides from the first, the ends from the second and the floor from the third.  Then you could mill out a recess behind the windows that would hold a strip of clear styrene, and reassemble the parts into one model.  If you go to that extreme, you could cast the modified parts for multiple models.

Bryan B., thanks for the suggestion. I'll be on the lookout for some of the Lima cars then to see if it will solve the issue. Though MT could solve the problem for me real easy. A Pullman coach would be a logical follow up to the sleepers, and a welcome one.

I'm still looking for a Lima PRR coach.  No Ebay thank you.  If any of you have one or know where to get one, I'll gladly reimburse you for it.  Have ordered from several site that list them but they are all out and I double they will ever do another run. 

I did think that MT said they were doing heavyweight coaches in the future.  What type - who knows.  Some people want single window, some want paired windows.  Coaches are vastly different than heavyweight Pullomans which were somewhat standard.  Coachs were like cabooses and steam engines on the railroads - no standard model.

Rivarossi made (makes?*) a paired window Pullman HW coach - so I guess when asking for a HW coach one should be specific.

* Not sure who made the RR HW sets that Concor released last year

Are you sure #274 was a 70' car like the Pennsy prototype Model Power/Lima car?

Holy Mackeral.  I was at a large flea market last summer and there was a guy trying to get rid of a bunch of model trains.  Most of it was HO but he did have a bunch of Pennsy coaches from Atlas, Lima and Model Power there.  Must have been 20 -25 of them.  He wanted $2.00 each.  I passed on them as I have all the coaches I need.  A lot of that old stuff shows up at flea markets and garage sales.

I got at least half dozen of the old Rivirossi/Atlas ones but I need the Lima to add the Pennsy Parts roof and ice A/C.  I'll gladly swap a Rivirossi/Atlas ones for the Lima ones.  John was kind enough to give me a proper combine but still need a coach.

Hope this isn't a complete competition for your needs.

Seems to me that "thin" passenger car sides would be a near-ideal application for those Silhouette robo-cutters that are starting to pop up like measles around here...

Are you sure #274 was a 70' car like the Pennsy prototype Model Power/Lima car?

I know the Model Power car has the same # of single and double windows sets as 274. Not sure of the length yet. Feel free to help.
