Hmmph.  Or a sense of humor at all...  I'll try not to compliment people's imaginative engineering in the future.

I'm guessing that when you said "this is an elegant solution..." you meant his original idea, but he read it as you praising your own modification. The way it was phrased, it could be read either way.
