Rolling stock designation

Curious question. Is there a listing of rolling stock designations?
Probably a better way to ask that, but not sure how to word it.

That's definately the best list as it shows changes to the types over the years.

These codes are the AAR's "Mechanical Designation"; there are modern car type codes which are a letter followed by 3 digits. Which are more detailed, but you need a detailed lookup table to figure them out, and they're used in registers but not painted on cars themselves.

Am I correct in reading the dates as start and stop dates of the designation's use and, where there's only one date, that would be a start date and the designation's still in use?

The dates show which issues of the ORER the description is pulled from. Looks like the highest one used there is 1999, so if it's to "4/1999" that's basically to present.

Non-interchange and MOW equipment isn't listed in ORERs; there are some standard designations but also lots of custom types of work equipment. Not sure why those particular descriptions without designations were specifically listed in the source ORERs.

I don't believe those dates are specific to when the change happened.  The list is compiled from a number of ORERs over time.

Definitions have been taken from the 1/1917, 4/1924, 9/1925, 2/1926, 3/1927-2/1928, 3/1928-10/1928, 3/1929, 7/1930, 4/1938, 1/1939, 1/1941, 7/1943, 1/1949, 1/1953, 1/1956, 10/1957, 4/1958, 1/1961, 1/1962, 10/1966, 1/1968, 1/1973, 1/1980, 7/1984, 4/1990, 7/1991, 4/1994, 1/1995 & 4/1999 ORERs. Not reported 8/1926, 12/1926-1/1927.
