WM - it just keeps getting cooler

the WM crossed the PRR and West Penn Traction with this bridge.  i'm not sure which one the trussed support crossed.  i'll be out that way soon and will get picture.  very interesting.

correction - the bridge only crossed the PRR, the West Penn Traction line made a sharp turn and went up the other side of the ridge to the left of the WM and PRR.

That PRR line was a spur that came off the main line near Greensburg and traveled Southwest through Youngwood and New Stanton then South through Mt. Pleasant and Everson to Connellsville and then West to Uniontown and terminates at Smithfield, PA.  That line is still operated by the Southwest Pennsylvania RR (SWP) which is owned by Westmoreland and Fayette counties, and operated by Carload Express.  SWP interchanges with CSX Transportation in Connellsville, PA; Wheeling & Lake Erie in Everson, PA and the Norfolk Southern in Radebaugh, PA [outside Greensburg, PA]

Carload Express also operates the Allegheny Valley RR over some former PRR tackage along the Allegheny River.  There is no direct connection between the SWP and the AVRR

That West Penn Car was one of forty made by the Cincinnati Car Co in 1910 or thereabouts.  It resembles a Peter Witt car that Bachmann has announced but I suspect it predated the the Peter Witt cars by a couple of years.

the PRR and B&O weren't the only lines in Everson (they crossed on a diamond right by my mom's childhood home).  there was another player, the P&LE.  it went up the west bank of Jacob's creek and accessed the coke ovens in Scottdale.  as a kid, i walked the former PMcK&Y tracks through a farmer's field and ended up in Broadford.  it was a long walk back!

i only ever saw one Conrail train on the tracks, it was during a funeral for my great aunt's husband in 1982.  the cemetery is along the hill south of Everson by the gonset hut - it was just an engine, a single gon, and a cabin car heading up from Connellsville.  we used to go to the Coal and Coke Heritage Festival - it was neat going to long forgotten coke ovens.  Hunker had a bunch that were recently uncovered.

i'll have to check my West Penn book - it's been a long time since i've opened it.  i do recall a great shot of a West Penn trolley running parallel to a B&O Big Six.
