Lee, your not the only one to get a new camera.  Just bought a Nikon D90 mainly because my old D40 which if 3 years old was giving me some problems.  The D90 can do video.  I download it to Photoshop O.K. and it plays.  I use Photobucket to store.  Problem is it didn't download as a video.  Anyone know how to to this.  Also any cheap video editing software I could use.

Bob,
Depending on your version of Widnows, you may have Movie Maker already installed.  It will either be under MS Office or Tools . . . I think.

And what went wrong with a D40 - I thought they were bullet proof.

Found Movie Maker on my PC.  Downloaded and put together 4 raw clips into one.  I'll teach myself the tricks as I go along.  However, every time I try to download to Photobucket I get an connection error for some reason.

The D40 still works.  I got a Tamron 18-270 lens which worked for awhile but now on the D40 it keeps adjusting for a few seconds before taking the photo.  No problem with my older lens.  I got the new lens to take the place of 3 other lens but since it doesn't want to work properly with the D40 I decided to get an upgraded model.  Beside, it's kinda cool to be able to do videos.

How big is the file you are trying to upload?   If it's too big, you'll often just get "time out" errors from the server, rather than an error telling you to trim the size.

I keep getting the message "A network error has cause for video upload to fail".

I used the earlier Tamron 18-250 on my D50 and it was tack sharp, although it suffered from barrel / pin-cushion distortion, and I miss not using it on my new body.

As far as AF working properly there are some points to consider.  It is not uncommon to encounter situations were the AF starts to hunt and will not lock onto the
desired subject.  AF works on contrast between light and dark and I've found bright loco headlights directly in the AF area can confuse the system.   Less than
fully charged batteries and colder temperatures also have an impact on AF functioning, I've been using old manual focus lenses recently when shooting in winter
conditions.  For fast moving objects locking on can also be problematic, in such cases I find it helpful to start pre-focusing by depressing the shutter button half
way a few times before you actually commit to firing.  You might try testing the AF in a controlled environment with good light, temperature and a static object
to better measure your AF performance.

It could be that the focus settings on your new camera don't match the old one.  Maybe you have the new one set to point focus and the old one was for a wide area?  It could also be that the new one has more focus zones.

I have the Sony version of the Tamron 18-250 and love it.  It is the same as yours but the autofocusing screw is tuned for the Sony and the design is a little different.

The lens works fine on the new camera, it causes focusing problems on the old one.  I'm keeping the old one as a backup and the other lens I have work great on it.
