Athearn Rio Grande Wood Caboose ,Photos Please.

  The request for photos of the Athearn D.&.R.G.W. wood caboose has caused me to present a moni history of Grande cabooses. These are all N Scale. First Photo on left Round House /MDC N wood caboose. Rio Grande early logo.Car on right new Athearn Rio Grande car later Flying Rio Grande Logo. The freightcar color(red-brown) looks better on Athearn.

   Rio Grande built their steel cabooses in the 1940's at their Burnham Shop Complex in Denver. The cars were originally black, had four pained side windows hard to see on my semi detailed out Bachmann car. The car on the right in the second photo with orange (Grande Gold) cupola represent a Yard Caboose assigned to Roper Yard in Salt Lake in 1947,yard cars were like transfer cars used in yard and on local runs these cars were former Denver & Salt Lake Route steel cars,which looked slightly different from the Atlas car used here painted by Kent Hunt.   Next we have a Narrow Gauge Caboose on a flat car. Only a few of the Grand's long Narrow Gauge Cabooses had single cupola side windows. Most had two. RGS sister cars had mostly one window.            Nate Goodman (Nato).                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                     A steel caboose in the single stripe silver and gold scheme. This is a stock Atlas model. Missing ,black steel car with two yellow side stripes indicating radio equiped,(can't find ny custom painted model) and a car in the multi stripe scheme,very hard to decal.

     Last two Rio Grande Caboose (short History) photos. A modern Extended Vision car, A not completely accurate Con Cor Car. The orange color is way off. Once again I couldn't find my Atlas Extended Vision car in the single stripe colors,an much more accurate model. Nate Goodman (Nato).                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                             Rio Grande later plate over the windows on their steel and Extended Vision cars, must have been dark and gloomy inside. Cars weathered badly and the plated over windows looked awful. My Atlas car represents this,but I could not stand to have my crews in the dark so I left 2 windows on one side one on the other similar to Santa Fe. In closing this History out, Wood Cabooses had steps that were more like tender stirup steps on steam locos,not like steps on Athearn model. Then there is the Foob Atlas car that has been offered forever. Black body with large Orange Flying Rio Grande on lower body sides.

Nate, here is another version of the 1400 series DRGW caboose. This being the welded side. It is built from the Trainworx Brass side kit.

     Thanks for the Photo,yes the Train Works kit is quite nice. Rio Grande Crews on the modernized versions of these cars hated the sealed non opening side windows. Nate Goodman (Nato).
