PM/RC Ortner 5 bay

In the recent scratchbuild thread (which naturally covered a bunch of kitbashed models), Bryan B suggested the RC Ortner as a starting point for N&W's enormous H-14 coke wood chip hopper.

I scored one on the cheap (under $10 delivered!) on the bay but I was a little shocked at the tooling on this - check out the detail on the bay doors:

It should be an interesting project (once I get into it). This will be a one-off model for me so I can live with the neanderthal tooling (but can you believe MSRP on these is now $22.95? ).

Think of it this way Mark - if the car stays upright on the track, no one will see the runner injection gate on the center bay!  

Using the PM car should make modeling the H-14 much easier, even with having to add additional bay detail.  Looking forward to seeing the finished model.

What is in your detail kit Bernie?

It's a photo etched fret with parts to simulate the door mechanism. The link above has photos and more details. The actual mechanism on the prototype  is quite complex, but these parts do a good job of looking like the real thing. You glue the pedestals to the hopper bottoms. Then add a piece of wire through the holes and then add the door actuators. There is also a spring like damper included in the kit that is optional, but recommended.

I did a string of these for my IPPX hoppers. It is a bit time consuming, but they look cool when done. I did an article about the IPPX hoppers in NSR a few years ago.
