X58 plans? Doors?

Wasn't there a Western road which had cars based on these plans?  Thought I remember reading something about it.

Indeed - CB&Q 23300-23499 (class XML-14), and 20695-20899 (class XML-16), built in 1967 and 1969 respectively.  The first group was delivered in the Chinese Red schme, and the second group in "merger" green.  There are probably some pics on rrfallenflags.org.

While those cars could certainly be considered similar, they are different.  The sills are different, the CB&Q cars had a full length flange beneath the ribs and door and they had shorter length ribs that terminated at that flange.
The CB&Q cars also had door stops in the fifth panel to the right of the doors.  These are pretty key spotting differences.

Thanks for keeping me honest, Bryan.  The CB&Q (later, BN) cars are not true X58s, but the roof/ends/side panels/doors are right on.  Some work on the side sill and addition of door stops would get you there.

As a LV modeler, I'm pulling for an N scale version from FVM, ESM, or maybe ExactRail!

We know Exactrail won't do it... it was never used on the SP.

FVM? Maybe, but he seems busy with other projects.

FNS... they seem rather disinterested in any new freight car kits.

Any prototype that hasn't been modeled in N remains a possibility.  Currently though, ESM's focus is predominantly on the XIH.

Just think about how perfectly the X58 fits into ESM's niche...!  It's never been done correctly in N, it's an East Coast prototype, it spans several eras, ran in multiple schemes and large numbers...  Seems like a slam dunk to me! ;D
