MON VALLEY RAILROAD CLUB of WV
CELEBRATES NATIONAL MODEL RAILROAD MONTH

November is National Model Railroad Month. The Mon Valley Railroad Club of WV, located at 128 Pleasant Street in downtown Morgantown will be celebrating this event with a three-day model train exhibit. It all takes place in the Shenandoah Room of West Virginia University's Mountainlair during Mountaineer Week, November 13th, 14th and 15th, 2009. Hours for the model railroad exhibit are Friday and Saturday, 11am til 8pm and Sunday from Noon til 4pm. The exhibit is free to the public.

National Model Railroad Month has been celebrated across the country for years. During November model railroad clubs around the country will hold open houses, clinics, and workshops to increase public awareness of Model Railroading. There are more than 500,000 adult model railroaders in the United States who spend over 500 million dollars a year on the hobby of model railroading. Children of all ages enjoy seeing miniature replicas of long gone steam locomotives worm their way through mountains, past rivers, and through small towns and large cities. Model railroading is a great family hobby. Fathers, daughters, sons, and mothers can all enjoy building a layout. Children will learn carpentry and electrical skills along with painting and decorating scenery skills.

Model Railroading comes in many sizes or scales. The most popular scale today is called HO. Trains in this scale are 1/87th the size of a real locomotive or railroad car. The next most popular scale is "O" scale. These trains are 1/48th size of real trains. They are commonly associated with Toy trains from the 1950's and are still being produced today by Lionel and other companies.. Garden Railroads or "G" scale have become very popular in the last few years. These trains are the largest available and many people build elaborate systems outside in their yards, hence the name.

The Mon Valley Railroad Club of WV started in Morgantown over 22 years ago. Our club has a permanent layout with over 500 feet of mainline. It is the largest HO scale model railroad in North Central West Virginia. The club's 12 ft. by 24 ft. modular layout will be on display at the Mountainlair. It has scenes reminiscent of the Morgantown area from the 1950's. So come out and join us as we celebrate model railroading, the world's greatest hobby. Model Railroading is FUN!

The Mon Valley Railroad Club meets every Thursday evening at 6:30 (business meeting the first Thursday). Guests and new members are always welcome. For more information contact Richard Henderson at 1-304-276-1046 or if you have internet access visit our website at: www.MVRRC.org.
