Ok; I know what they look like; I have a few brass sets - I can sort of figure out what they were for, but I really don't know what they were exactly used for; were they "removable" ? Did they get taken off in the summer...?

I am working on a GN GP 7, Big Sky Blue and have a few photo's of units in the series I am modeling and some have em, some don't...... and can I assume that the interior windows are still in their place....

Help....... :o

They let the engineer stick his head out far enough to see a man on the ground during switching without getting wet or cold. That's the theory, anyway. I don't like them, I prefer using a mirror.

Oh, sorry, they don't get taken off in summer. They do open up like any other window though, and the interior windows are in place like normal. At least on all the ones I've ever had (BN)

Many thnaks Pete - I assumed they had a rather pedestrian use as they are certainly not universal in application.
