I was thinking that the 1x4 frames would carry the main deck, and the lower level staging could be a simple plywood shelf attached to the wall with brackets.

Adjust the grade to the staging by moving the brackets.  That way your main frames are for the most part level...

But I think I see what you're after...

You can so cheat those 4% grades. Remember it just needs to clear the upper deck, I think you could pull it off with 2% while the grade still goes downhill underneath the layout. You can get really creative with the highpoint in the lower right corner. Use a side mounted switch control to "apply brakes" for the stuff on parked on the grades.

No, for once Steve is right. ;D  The thin upper deck gives him the profile he needs to let the staging deck dive below.  But switch machines can be problematic.  The simple answer is ground throws.  Everything will be within easy reach, so that's not a big problem, but if you're looking to do some dispatching from a central location, you'll want some sort of power applied to the throws.

Save the tortoises for the staging tracks, that will make it easy to signal them and run them remotely, and you don't have the clearance issue down there.

How much room between decks?  I guessed you have about 33' run on the upper level, or 396".
5" between tracks would be 1.26% grade
6" = 1.5%
7" = 1.76%
8" = 2%
Give or take. Some of the grade can be on the lower level, but the lower yard will need to be flat.

That's about what I was thinking.  8" would be optimal, allowing about 2" for the thickness of the upper deck and 6" clear for thumbs and elbows.

i'm looking at a total distance of 8" between the top of the rail in the staging area to the bottom of the upper level.  this allows me to get my head stuck under there and the cat needs somewhere to sleep.  anything less just isn't comfortable for the cat.

the upper deck will be the thickness of 1/2' plywood and homasote - there will only be a tabletop in the center 8 or so feet above the staging.  everything else is cookie cutter.

The 1" thick deck will be supported by something, no? 


I used 1x1's I cut to support a membrane of 1/4" luaun with 3/4" foam to get my 1" thick subroadbed.

it will float - i have a cool Telsa invention.  8)

it's 18" wide - a set of 1x2 vertical supports every 2 feet should be plenty.

ok, what's the date of this disaster.  i figure 3 sheets of 3/4' plywood should be more than plenty and then another sheet of 1/2" plywood and a sheet of homasote - sound about right?  they got homasote at the Home Depot over by you?
