Nothing sounds as good as an SD40-2... strangely, NS's rebuilt SD40-Es that are showing up all over the 'curve, don't sound as good. I'm guessing it's the different pipes.

Nice stuff. I saw one of those rolling over a trestle in the Shenandoah valley years ago. I've digged those high noses ever since.

Yep... they all have exhaust silencers.  it was good to see the former N&W SD50S' last weekend... even if they did get reworked trucks and extended-range dynamics.

Nothing????  How about a Ferrari V-12 or a Porsche flat 6? Or a lumpy Ford 351?

Flanges would rank a distant second to things I would like to heat squeal (and I ain't thinking Deliverance either!)

oddly enough, i have been really digging the N&W as of late and it's the high hood 40-2's that are drawing me in.  good stuff.

I used to live about a 1/4 mile from that spot. It was an active intermodal yard when I used to rail fan there.

Before Amtrak took over Southern passenger service, the Piedmont (believe trains 5 and 6) stopped there to pick up trailers to add to the end of that train.  Remember taking that train once and picked up 3 or 4 pigs with 2 trailers each.  I asked the conductor what they were hauling and he said the trailers were loaded with thread going to the Carolina mills.
