New B&M paints from Scalecoat...

I periodically check the Scalecoat II site - and noticed that there are two new BM colors listed - thought you New Englanders might be interested:

We talked to the RPM(Testor's/Floquil) rep before the OKC train show in Dec. at the shop. With the four "nut job" states"(CA, CT, NJ, and the one I never remember,) he thinks in five years, solvent based hobby paints will be gone, and Floquil isn't planning on expanding the Polly Scale colors to replace many solvent based Floquil enamels. He said there may be a dozen more Polly Scale colors, maybe as many as two dozen, but the aircraft/armour guys system of 5 parts #xxx, 10 parts #yyy will become far more common in model railroading. Big "gripe" about Polly Scale and ScaleCoatII and Badger (and Tamyia and Gunze Sanyo) paints not being "compatabile" to mix with each other isn't going to change. Asked quite directly about the Testor's Model Master's line of solvent-based paints, not good news at all. Their "experiments" with water-based versions (especially the Metalizers) haven't been encouraging yet, and the crazies against solvent based paints are going to "win", either with "This is known to cause cancer" or law-suits. The nut cases will "class action" RPM to death. If you don't keep up with it, the Humbrol enamels have tripled in price in the last year. :

Wait a minute, Scalecoat II is solvent based...  In fact, isn't Krylon and the 30 million cans of paint I can pick up at my local Wal-Mart (yes, we nutjobs in NJ do have Wal-Mart's too) solvent based????

There's almost nothing left that needs to be painted anyway, unless Robbman makes those C39-8's.

The neatest paint I've ever found, BTW is this "florist's paint" they sell in Michaels - the Tuscan Rose or something is so close to CR Freight Car Red it is almost amazing.  Covers well, dries quickly to a decal perfect finish...

Most "hobby paints" are being required to be non-toxic. Every year the requirements get stricter. And Krylon and Rust-O-Leum are selling non-toxic versions of rattle-can paints too. Depending on exactly where you live, hobby paints can't be toxic or have various VOC's(volitile organic compounds) in them. A huge English artist's oil paint company (been around for about 200 years) no longer sells their paints in the US. They are as well known as Winsor-Newton water-colors, but I can't pull the name up right this minute(sorry). The Artist's store near me has big sign in the window saying they can no longer get them. Zeglier's sells canvases, a dozen brands of super quality paint brushes, 5 brands of airbrushes in stock, all of the Badger air-brush colors made, several brands of water colors, oil paints for artists, acrylics...it's a REAL art store. Now the artists are using Spanish oil paints and if you look, the HyperScale guys that use oils for weathering effects have talked about not being able to get some brands of oil paints. If you get the fancy wood working catalogs, they say so-and-so brands of lacquers can't be shipped to CA, NJ. House of Color can't ship their auto paints to CA and NJ and CT, right out of the new Eastwood catalog I got Monday. If you aren't a registered user, you can't buy DuPont Imaron paints now. It requires an EPA permit. I just wanted to pass along the info that solvent based hobby paints which may be you favorites, may quite suddenly "dissapper", first in certain locations, later altogether. If you live in certain EPA "targeted" locals for "air quality attainment", it may happen quite abruptbly.

Walkercolt - I know some people go overboard here...  Someone I know wanted me to send join a campaign to ban the sale of WASP spray because of some vague concern regarding honeybees. What am I supposed to do about our wasp problem, try reasoning with them to move their nests???

Yeah, I know about "reasoning with a wasp" or a water moccassin or rattlesnake. I don't want to spread toxins everywhere, either. Just how much "pollution" is caused by hobby paints? I'm sure it's a fraction of a fraction of a percent. (Far less than women's hairspray and nail polish!). All I'd like is the rarest of items today; some common sense. Out in wheat country, they are very worried about the loss of honeybees. Now when we were using those "nasty" pesticides like chlordane and malithianon and DDT, the honeybees were doing fine. Today we use all these "natural based" pesticides and the honeybees are dissapering. We need a multi-billion dollar goverenment study to figure this out. BTW: Since Racheal Carson almost single-handedly stopped the use of DDT,  UNESCO estimates between one and one and half BILLION people have died directly or indirectly from mosquito borne illnesses.

Don't you know that all hobby paints are used by kids.  And we've got to protect the kids.

Sure, it doesn't matter that the vast majority of users are WELL above legal age (the average age of buyers of hobby paints is probably in the 40s), there's just too many vocal people who think the only people "playing with models/trains/etc" are kids.  And they don't need to be huffing on solvent-based paint.

It's exactly the same crap they pull with video games.  It doesn't matter if the average age of a gamer is in their 30s, too many vocal idiots just see the kids playing and think all M-rated games should be banned as there's no reason to be making them since only kids buy video games.

Mark, those same tween's and teens go into the RC shops and buy 30% nitro-methane fuel for thier cars/trucks/ etc. and nobody says a thing about that. I'm beginning to think 40% of Amuracuns need a good butt kicking by the other 60%, or have a saw-mill slat cracked over thier heads.(Iffn' ya' don't know whut a slat is, wall', some folks in SE Okra-Homer kin' larn' ya'!) ;D
