Guys,
   The last year I worked before retiring 6-30-08 our next door neibor was Sparta Truss. Lumber came in on centerbeams and went out on centerbeams as well as flatbed trucks ,but then they not only made product for themselves but several other companies into supplying building construction materials.

    No I don't have any pictures ,but then I was more interested in the steel supply company that built their new plant across the street from us.

I don't dispute that it could happen.  There are a lot of "commodity" size trusses...  84 carries a stock of 4/12 24' trusses at just about every location, plus they have a pretty efficient regional rail re-load distribution set up, so there's a good chance that at some point they could ride the rails. 

My only thought is that truss plants are everywhere, and no construction manager in his right mind would would pay for all that shipping to have something move so far and in such bulk that it needs rail transport.  Trusses are primarily short haul, light weight, custom order type of loads, not something the railroads do very efficiently.

On the Atlas forum Joe of MTL stated he saw a prototype behind MTL in Talent with the truss load .

Can't say I've ever seen a buildin site that's only accessable by rail... and I've been in many a part of ByGod, WV on NS...

There are places in Northern Ontario and Manitoba that are only accessible by rail, with no road access. Can't imagine them shipping prefab trusses up there though. Just ship in the raw lumber and stick-build it on site.

Exactly.  If I've learned anything in 15 years of construction, trusses stop being economical real fast if you have to handle them more than once.
