Since I work there (and used to live 5 minutes from the old ROW) and still get to see some of its remnants, I would like to do a modern day Baltimore and Annapolis RR scene from Baltimore south to Annapolis. It would all be light industry in a scenic, wooded area serving fictional customers because Kohl's doesn't get boxcars    ;D  .

A lot of box cars primarily with an occasional covered hopper thrown in for variety being pulled by MP15s and a restored GP30 for power.

Other railroads that fascinate me include the Maryland Midland, the Delaware Coast Line, and the Carolina Southern.

I currently model CSX in the late 80's and eary 90's and ATSF in New Mexico.

 Other RRs include:

 - C&O in the early 70's ( DaveFoxx's fault ;).)

Aw, I bet you say that to all of the model railroaders.  ;D

Actually, our tastes parallel each other's.  When Atlas releases the CW40-8 in CSX in the Bright Future/YN2 color scheme, I'll be hard-pressed not to purchase a few, because that was the latest and greatest power that I saw at Bryan Park Terminal in late 1980s-early 1990s when I railfanned the RF&P.  Also, in my youth, I modeled the AT&SF, because I have always been a sucker for warbonnets.

Yeah, those CW40's are gonna be sweet, I saw tons of them on the old RF&P when my parents first took me railfanning in the late 90's. I've always been more inclined to the yellow and blue bonnet ATSF's myself. ::)

Wow, here comes pandora's box.

In no particular order.

1.) DL&W circa 1957, preferably the "Old Road" or the Boonton Line.
2.) Maine Central Circa Late 50's.
3.) Erie Lackawanna circa October 1964 (thanks to Ed K for inspiration on being "specific") Can anyone guess why?
4.) Burlington Northern, Circa 1973
5.) Reading Company Lines, Circa mid 70's.
6.) Chessie System, early - mid 1980's.

Some other railroads I'm interested in, but not well versed enough to decide on a time and/or location.

1.) Milwaukee Road's -- Chicago, Terre Haute and South Eastern division (Indiana coalfields)
2.) Indiana Railroad
3.) Southern Railroad
4.) SL-SF "FRISCO"

Some Freelanced Ideas inspired by the prototype

1.) Terminal Railroad of New Jersey (Merger of RDG, CNJ and PRSL as an alternative to Conrail)
2.) An modern independent Raritan River Railroad, which would also include switching rights on the NJ Transit "Coast Line"
3.) Something to do with Picatinny Arsenal, as if they closed up, and say, Progressive Rail came in and rented out the warehouse spaces.
4.) A "Merger" between the Western Pacific and Denver, Rio Grande and Western Railroad (seems logical, surprised it never happened)

Theres so much I am interested in, and yet so few dollars and time. If I only had a few million bucks.

I like the update. I just don't know why GE 70 tonners bug the heck out of me. You just gave me an idea...

You can bet the farm that if MR did a "Railroad You Can Model" type article on a railroad, I took it personally.  At least for a month.  ;-)

I'm with you on that.  I've found myself happily planning many railroads after reading a single article.  Several weeks and a few books later, I'm off on another plan.

I'm in the process of packing away my unfortunate efforts at a small Nn3 logging layout, so the planning has recommenced.  Unfortunately, I live right near a UP yard and can't stop ogling those grungy yellow Geeps.  Too bad I really don't like the UP.

1. Northwestern Pacific Guerneville Branch - I've got much of what has been written about it and driven the route many times.  I haven't been able to develop a track plan that works, but it has to include Korbel and some dual gauge track.

2. Southern Pacific - Either the early 1990s or pre-war.  Love every thing about it.  Its demise still stings.  My Oakland Mole is just a fantasy at this point.

3. Western Pacific - Spent part of my childhood watching it and its Sacramento Northern trains.  Often considered, never seriously planned.

4. Bath & Hammondsport - Featured in an old Model Railroader book and stuck with me and now with 44-tonners on the way, it's kinda tempting.

5. NPC - Another line I've found myself obsessing over.  Was on the drawing board for a while, but I'm a bit turned off to Nn3 at the moment.  Fiddling with temperamental little engines is fine, but when it takes up all the free time, it's a bit demoralizing.

6. BHP Nevada - Having watched these grungy SDs roll through the scrub gets me planning for a bare bones shelf layout.  This layout has been close to commencement more times than I can count.  No there wasn't a lot to this line, but there's a charm to its simplicity.

7. Early 20th Century PRR - Being a westerner my whole life, I've found the might PRR fascinating.  It was mythical and I longed to run a railroad full of K4s, H8s and E6s at high speeds into urban areas.  Maybe when I have more money, more space, and more time...okay, so maybe not.

8. YVRR - Who hasn't wanted El Capitan and Half Dome in their back drop?

My main roads are MKT, MP and SP in Texas.

But I have been partial to a few others-

MILW through the rockies, even with out the electrics. Amazing scenery, and cool power (SD40-2's and Little Joes)

SAL, FEC and RF&P in the steam era- No idea how I would model any of these roads, but they had great steam power and a good mix of traffic.

Erie Lackawanna- SD45's, SDP45's, C425's, U25B's and E8A's all in freight servcie at the same time, with a great paint scheme.

SSW, Frisco or KSC in the steam era- again, no idea how I would really model any of these, especially in N, but great power with interesting trains. 4-6-0's with Scullin disc drivers, 2-10-4's and the heaviest 4-8-2's around.

Squirrel, you mentioning the Frisco and Heavy Mountains hits close to home for me. I'm a Frisco fan...never lived more than two and a half blocks from their line thru Tulsa(shared with Santa Fe). Nothing ever made in n-scale is the least bit close to the look of Frisco's Heavy Mountains. They were big husky engines built to run fast freight thru the Ozark mountains. I doubt many people would admire their beauty...they were built to do a job and they did it. Kinda like a steam "GEVo".

It seems the Milwaukee is everyone's *second* favorite railroad...
I wonder how that would change if a Little Joe or Boxcabs were released in plastic...

As for me Canadian Pacific in North Western Ontario is my primary interest...

Other railroads that I've modeled or at least seriously considered are...

Algoma Central                       (Yes I'm one of the two people that bought the Kato SD40's  ;D)
Chicago & North Western         (The Alco line & the Cowboy Line)
Denver & Rio Grande Western   (Royal Gorge/Tennessee Pass)
Duluth Missabe & Iron Range
Erie Lackawanna
I&M Rail Link
Milwaukee Road                      (Trans-Missouri division/Rockey Mountain division)
Minnesota Commercial              (Could model damn near the whole thing in N, but if I were to choose I would do the Hiawatha district with little or no compression)
Penn Central
Rock Island                            (Spine Line)
Soo Line                                (Glenwood to Winnipeg)
Union Pacific                          (The modern Triple Track across Nebraska is one of the most impressive things I've seen)
Western Pacific                       (The Inside Gateway/High Line)
Wisconsin Central Ltd.

Re: Milwaukee Road

Little Joes and Box Cabs don't do it for me.

Now, on the other hand.....

Say a very detailed (300 page) book on the CTH&SE became available with history, maps, photos, etc.

I'd drop whatever I was doing and make the shift in a heartbeat.

WP - I like the thought of modeling the Oakland - Oroville segment
D&RGW - West end in UT and CO
EL - Southern Teir in western NY/PA
GTW - Durand to the west
SOO - Original SOO in WI
MILW - After the end of electrics, through the ID panhandle (incl. St Maries)
D&H - When the C628's, U30C & U33C's were running

I am heavily influenced by what I have seen in the various countries I have lived in or visited (with the notable exception of the UK; 15 years living there and just not interested):

South African Railways in the mid 80s - I could see steam, diesel and electric in operation all on the same day. Wonderful 1067mm gauge locos and scenery. Wicked gradients and curves, doubled headed 4-8-4s on freight trains in 1987!
German Railways in the 80s when some of the old pre-war electrics could still be seen.
German railways in the 60s when so much superb steam was still around.
Harz metre gauge (Germany). Happy memories.
Switzerland in the days when the crocodiles were still in action.
New Zealand contemporary, perhaps with a steel mill emphasis as that's where I work these days
N&W in the 50s (thanks Mr Link)
Virginian Electrics!
Southern in the tuxedo days
Modern NS
Erie Lackawanna in the SDP45 days
Wheeling and Lake Erie
C&O in the last days of steam
Perhaps some Delmarva/Eastern Shore stuff
Perhaps a little modern CSX as it is what I used to see from day to day for 6 years of living in Virginia.

BNSF & UP from railfanning in Chicago & Kansas City, add Metra & Amtrak, branching out (back) to Santa Fe & SP, with a little bit of CNW, CB&Q & MoPac to fill in the Midwest geographical mix...

Technically they'd be my OTHER railroads tho' since my railroading / railway interests started w/ the LMS and L&NWR, & continues through the Bluebell preservation line (thanks to Dapol releases of Q1, 9F, & Terrier (soon))
