John Allens Gorre and Daphetid RR

Good day,

I did some google searches and couldn't find anything so thought I'd ask;
Did anyone at some point take John Allen's G&D RR and change the dimensions for an N scale possibility?
Just curious if a track plan in N scale is out there somewhere.

John Allen's trackplan is actually archaic. It represented the "spaghetti bowl" idea of the 1950's, mainline tracks paralleling each other to gain mileage. Of course some still favor that over the linear idea championed by his contemporary John Armstrong.

The old book, 101 Trackplans, by Linn Wescott, had a plan for the original GD that could be scaled to any size you like.  However it was pretty tight for HO, so it might be cool to build it in N scale using the HO dimensions (which would also help overcome some of that 'spaghetti' effect).

I don't recall if the original  GD had handlaid (ie, nonstandard) turnouts, but it might be interesting to redo the plan in Atlas RTS, using the C55 library.

There was an MR article eons ago about an N scale layout converted from Allen's base plan, which was 4x8 or 5x10 or some such.  Pretty clever little track plan as I recall.  But I agree, archaic by today's standard.

FWIW and IIRC there were several versions of the G&D. Track plans were published in the mags back then (again IIRC).

The issue is Feb 1990.  It was titled, "The Gorre and Daphetid in a French Mirror".  I am pretty sure I still have that issue.  It was a nicely done little layout.  It is the same issue that MR introduced their Burlington Northern project layout.  If you want, I can get Mr Peabody to take me back in the wayback machine and dig it out.  May even be available as a back issue from MR.  I also have the 101 Trackplans book it is listed in.

Original G&D was only 3'7"x6'8". In N that is 23"x43.5".

  Sombody on the N Scale List at Yahoo! Groups has built a very nice N scale logging style layout based on Allen's original smaller layout, which he later incorporated inside the larger G&D. I wish I could recall the builders name as he posted photos in a folder in that groups photo section. Nate Goodman (Nato).

The GD is very closely approximated using Atlas code 80 with the plan for "High Sierra" by Terrain for Trains. It works out to 30"x 48".

I have played with xtrkcad, and came up with similar designs using Atlas code 55, but they are a little larger.
