Wow, thanks for your generous offer to help me with my layout planning.  Your knowledge of the area and your track-planning skills will, I'm sure, be absolutely phenomenal assistance to me.  In fact, I may take such advantage of you that you may live to regret your offer.  ;D

I think what you have in mind (RF&P in a loop and the C&O running in and out of staging) is what I have in mind.  Keep me posted on your HN Cabin project.  I'll be fascinated to see your end result.

Build a diorama to work on scenery skills, then start a layout based on the Ulster and Delaware/NYC Catskill mountain branch. Already have much of the equipment. Alco locomotives, mostly appropriate freight and passenger equipment, work and MOW equipment. Track planning will be a killer. Small cities on both ends. A riverfront yard in Kingston with a nearly 4% climb through a tunnel to the NYC and O&W interchanges. Two three percent mountain grades, lots of very small towns. Twisting and turning route. Moderate agricultural traffic, including farm supplies and milk. Note to self, get N scale Architect's Sheffield Farms creamery, and Hanford Mills kits. Good luck to everyone else on their projects.

Dave, I'm really looking forward to seeing what you do on this layout as been trainspotting on the old RF&P my whole life. My railfan days
began when my older brother got into trains in the late 90's. I was 6 or 7ish at the time but still remember it well. My parents would take my brother and me to Ashland and Doswell all the time. Ashland, Doswell and Acca yard are my haunts still. Will you be including Ashland
on the layout? That would be cool. 

You lucky dog!  I can think of worse places to railfan.  I miss living within fifteen minutes of Bryan Park Terminal.   I love motive power and have the weakness for having waaaaay more model locomotives than I can use on my layout.  I have to admit that Atlas' CW40-8 and C40-8 models in CSX and Conrail schemes are going to hard to resist, because they were some of the latest run-through power on the road when I railfanned the RF&P in 1991-92.  But, I am trying to stick to the pre-CSX years, which allows a lot of fallen flags to be run prototypically.

Ashland would be a great inclusion into an RF&P-themed layout, but I don't know if I can fit that in or not, based on my space.  That would be pretty cool to railfan a model Ashland, wouldn't it?  Your constructive criticism will be welcomed as well once I start track planning.

Yep, I wish I could have seen it in the RF&P days though. I understand about Ashland too, I'm surprised I've never seen a model of it though.

As for modeling resolutions I hope to finish my CSX north mountain subdivision side of my door layout. and maybe get started on the ATSF Glorieta pass side of the the door.
