lowering Deluxe Innovations 40 footers

I've had a few of these kits lying around forever, and finally put one together last night. 

is it just me or do they ride HIGH?  I body mounted the couplers, and they seem to be in the way of any lowering I might want to do.

What have you guys done with these?   MT couplers?  They seems to have a thinner box..

Are you sure you mean Deluxe? I didn't know they made kits.

Did they have Separate Ladders/Grabs? Metal or plastic roofwalks? Can the Doors slide open?

I'm pretty sure I lowered my DI cars. I don't run them much because their Erie 3 pack set all look too dark to me.

I haven't done these, but there was an MR article back in the nineties that explained it.

The rule of thumb: work slowly, removing a little bit of the bolster and underframe at a time.  If you lower them a lot at the bolster, you can't just body mount a coupler or the coupler will be too low.  You'll probably want to notch the floor and file away some of the end and keep truck mounts, or ... jeesh, now i know why I changed scales ... body mount z scale 905s.

But seriously, if it's for the transition era, the color photos I've seen show cars that are blacker and sootier.  Generally, at least.

The IM cars are great models with many many paint schemes for 40s, 50s, and 60s modelers.  Here are a few I painted over on the weathering/detailing page:

It's easy to lower these by filing the "square" off the bolster while you are building the car.  Just take it down so it's flush with the cross member (no idea what the "proper" name is), then body-mount a 1023.
