The NS SD45-2 is interesting as I saw one yesterday...

 - have they fixed the flimsy handrail problem?
 - do the bodies still come off when you pick the model up?

I like my CR SD45-2. It will problably be the last new engine I get for a while with the new house and all.

Overall, I like the engine a lot. I think they improved on the latter SD40/45T-2. Fit and finish is a bit better, but handrails are still very fragile. The lack of a treaded walkway annoys me as well as the glued on windows.

Overall I would grade it as a solid B+

Glued in windows and no walkway tread gets a B+? Crap, no wonder you liked the Bachman Dash-8s so much...  ;D

Thanks!

What bothers me - and I am sure it's largely my fault - are the handrails - which I can never seem to get back in (and straight) once they have popped out.

In all honesty, I hate the newer Kato handrails as well - which never stay straight.

This is one thing Atlas does better than anyone.

From the ones I've seen in person...they're not completely terrible, but definitely not worth more than an Atlas unit. Freaking cab roofs still have the sag/molding imperfection, and that's just inexcusable in my book.

I  ordered two of the Conrail units.  I ended up returning them because they had issues I could not accept.  First, a handrail stanchion on the front pilot of one unit was not placed in the anticlimber.  It looked like they tried to get it in there, but the hole was so filled with paint it did not fit.  They tried to jamb it in, that didn't work, so they just left it that way.  One unit had a cracked handrail on the pilot.  The paint on the handrails was too thick and it was flaking.  It looked like the handrails were covered in dust and they then painted them.  Finally, the fuel tanks for the Conrail units just looked funny.  They appeared to be a little short.  That was the one thing that was unique about those units, the massive fuel tank.  As I said before, I returned the units.  I felt horrible about doing that, but for $90 a crack, I expected a lot better.  I'll stick with Atlas engines from now on.

I looked at a pair of these things, and was really not impressed.

In addition to the random fit and finish things like AI just talked about, there were also across the board fit and finish issues. Things like the huge gap between the cab roof and the long hood.

Then there are all the detail inaccuracies that, while I cannot list off the top of my head, were numerous. Search the archives here and you'll probably turn them up. This type of thing doesn't always kill a model for me, but on top of the other issues? Forget it.

Take the same coin and buy 3 Kato SD40s...
