grain company model - walthers mega bash?

i need to build a portion of this for my layout as a low profile structure...



the tracks are on both sides.  the 3 galleries - 6/10/10 make this a pain.

maybe i could use cigar tubes for the smaller gallery silos?

You could always try PVC plastic pipe of various diameters for the different silos. There's probably enough smaller diameters suitable for N-scale.

I'd go with Chris's suggestion, as the PVC tube usually has a thicker wall and, since you are going to need to sand or cut the sides  flat to get them to seat together like the prototype, the PVC wall thickness gives you the working room to do that. A belt sander would be helpful here, to get a uniform plane.

Exactly!  I would also go with PVC for the silos.  Some sheet styrene would work well for the other parts of the structure.  I think the most challenging part will be railings and the reinforcing wires.

Chris or Bob from TrainCat might be able to help you with custom etching, if you're not interested in doing it yourself. I know I am eager to try it one of these days, for custom boxcar sides, etc. Or the old jig scenario and some careful soldering would do the trick.

I am in the midst now of putting components into seperate sheets for builders as new products. Ladders, Stairs, Railings, Conveyors, etc will be in 8in lengths so you just have to cut/join how much you need.

i've never had a cigar from a glass tube.  i guess i fail at cigaring too  ;D

i might just build up the Walthers kit and all it close enough.  this layout is a bit off the mark prototypically... and so it goes

Been saving my old cigar tubes to eventually built a refinery/chemical complex.  Guess it has been awhile since I smoked a stogie since I never saw a glass tube.

Looks to me like you could hit it fairly close with two Walthers kits end to end, plus six Rix Butler grain bins with added height. You'd just have to scratch the piping.

I just finished one of these Walther's kits for my OneTrak module; you can see it in John's photos.  It's a fairly easy kit to build.

Couple of comments; if you're building this as a low relief (background) building, you can probably get away with a single kit and just cut it in half and mount it against the backdrop.  Of course then you'd only get tracks to one side, but that might still work depending on what you're doing.

The Walther's kit has a 4 silo section, the one in the proto photo is a 5 silo ection.  Hopefully that;s not big deal.  You'd still need something else for the 3 silos on the end.

The Walther's elevator (building) looks to be almost twice as wide as the ones in the photo, but there is only one instead of two; again an easy kitbash.

For another wierd idea - I buy Crystal Light drink mix; it comes in round white plastic tubes that would make real nice elevator silos.  The large size tubes are 6.25" tall and 2.625" in diameter; maybe a little large but possibly workable.

i have a few of these containers i was going to use, but they are a tad large.  2 of them stacked would be a great flood loader though.

i think i'm just going to go for the spirit of the elevator and chop the kit in half.

They just re-released them; matter of fact, about a month ago they had them on sale at a real good price.

Unfortunately, the add-on silo kit is out of stock and no word on a re-run.
