MR's Kato GG1 Review

My Dad's interested in kitbashing a Kato GG1 into a New Haven prototype electrified locomotive.

The review of the Kato GG1 in the Jan 09 Model Railroader said the Kato model has 41" wheels. Is this correct for the GG1?

Dad had a look at his Car and Loco Encyclopedia's and thinks the GG1 should have larger wheels (and thus be similar to the New Haven locos).

Can any one confirm the wheel size on Kato's model and if the review is correct?

Note that the drivers are 57" and the pilot wheels 36".

My Kato GG1 wheels measure .22”  (35.2”)  for the pilot wheels and .35” (56”) for the drivers. These are quick and dirty measurements since I didn’t disassemble the mechanism, but are reasonably accurate.  This makes them very close to the prototype’s diameters.

Just an FYI - the pilot wheel trucks for the comparable New Haven units (EP-3, EP-4 and EF-3) are two feet closer to the main drivers than they are for the GG-1.  The New Haven electrics also are shorter in length as a result.
