FYI, the black is the factory paint from the L&N scheme, I masked that with scotch celophane tape, which worked marginally well. I may go back with some black stripe decal to sharpen up the line under the grilles.
I then painted the entire lower part of the body flat white to get the white band as well as to prime for the red. The letter boards and nose herald were masked by photocopying the decals onto Avery labels, trimming them to the appropriate size, and placing them. The rest was masked with blue tape.
I believe I would have gotten cleaner lines if I had followed Rob's advice. Were it not for the scarcity of the decals, (old NorthEast sets) would probably strip and re-do.
I will be getting 'real' grabs, though. My colored wire experiment didn't work out the way I'd like.
