the return of Playa Desnuda

it's not much of a start...but it's something!



I blundered...I built the benchwork knowing the distance between each stud, then forgot to adjust for the drywall....tomorrow I plan to get and add the plywood, then cut the 2" foam...this is going to be the staging yard (possibly an operating yard in the future). I am trying to figure out what color to paint the top, I am leaning gray, black, earth, or Disney Go Away Green....

Consider adding corner glue blocks to the joints against the wall for strength against the leverage you would get by pushing down on the front edge.

Hmmm...maybe it's just the angle of your photo, but it appears your cross braces are positioned where your wall's studs are.  Are you planning on attaching your benchwork assembly to your wall, or just resting it on shelf brackets?  I would think that if you're going to screw it securely into your wall studs, positioning the cross braces directly at the stud positions is going to make that...well, difficult.

That's a great idea. I asked the google gods about how strong French cleats are and this is its response.

When properly made and anchored to wall studs, French cleats are outrageously strong, easily holding hundreds of pounds or even human weight. The wood joint itself is rarely the weak point; the actual weight limit depends entirely on your choice of materials, screws, and how securely you anchor the system to the wall framing. Key Factors That Determine Strength Fasteners: The screws holding the cleat to the wall take all the stress. Always screw directly into wall studs using heavy-duty structural or deck screws—never rely on drywall alone for heavy loads. Avoid brittle drywall screws that can snap under pressure. Material Choice: Use high-quality 3/4-inch plywood (like birch) or solid lumber. Avoid fragile materials like MDF or OSB, which can crumble, snap, or react poorly to moisture and humidity changes. Wall Contact: The wall cleat must sit completely flat. If your wall is bowed, use shims behind the cleat so the interlocking bevels make full contact and distribute the weight evenly.

I have a wall mounted 'floating' cabinet like this that is supposed to be able to take the weight of a 75"  flat screen tv.

My concern about mounting a layout with a French Cleat would be that something (like my head or shoulder) coming up underneath it could dislodge it if the layout isn't pretty heavy by itself.

A few well placed screwed on to the wall thin square blocks or even just protruding screw heads, perhaps covered by landscaping and/or buildings, can take care of that.  They will block the shelves from moving up.

I don't need anything that heavy, I expect that this section will weigh 25 pounds tops.  It's Southern California beach city scenery...and any hill is going to have a foam base
