I know the instruction set for this kit isn't awesome to begin with, but my instructions are clearly missing one or more pages just based on the sudden discontinuity between the first page and what I have as the second... Does anyone have a full copy of the GHQ PRR L1s conversion kit instructions? I would love a scanned copy if so. Will trade or pay if necessary.

Have you tried contacting GHQ directly? They probably have the instructions as a PDF (not visible online right now).

I wasn’t even sure if they were still in business but I followef your link and sent in a request. Thank you so much!

Dave,

I have several copies of the GHQ instructions for the L-1 conversions.  I have about 3 complete kits to do.  I am on vacation right now, but will be back next week.  I can scan them into a PDF and send them to you.

You have Max's article in the PRR magazine, right?  That's better than the instructions.

Got those too. This is a multi-pronged attack! For now, I'm pausing assembly of the GHQ kit while I install a Next18 plug for DCC.

There were two generations of the GHQ kit.  The first one had a cast pewter tender, the second generation had what I think was a resin casting.

The pewter one that I had suffered from very distinct casting lines across the center that had to be laboriously sanded off between the rivet lines.  The resin one seems to be easier but a lot lighter.

I also went through the exercise of boring a hole for the headlight wires.

But even today, that locomotive holds the record for drawbar pull for a single unit against everything else I own.  I did have to replace the traction tires once.   And under full load, it's also about the only locomotive I own that actually gets warm.

Yep, I'm building the old one. Now, I built one of these before...way back in 2004 I think. Maybe 2003? SO I recall the challenges. And somehow I did it with only the GHQ instructions.

I remember the "warmth," LOL. Especially at shows. It'd get downright hot.

As for headlights, I have several flush-mounted micr-mini LEDs with magnet wire and built-in resistors to use. I plan to o it that way versus some sort of fiber-optic connection to the Kato lightboard.
