We’re at Iowa State University for my daughter’s Odyssey of the Mind World’s Finals competition.  I went for a walk this morning towards downtown Ames where the Union Pacific mainline comes through (Clinton Subdivision, I think).

I’m guessing that this was the Ames passenger station in a previous life:

So, with nothing in sight, I walked up to the next block to check out Main Street when I heard a rumble.  No horn?  Doggone it, Ames must be a quiet zone, and this guy snuck up on me:

I missed the head end but figured I’d wait to see if there was a DPU.  Sure enough!  UP AC44CWCTE No. 5908:

On the way back to campus, this westbound unit train was led by NS AC44C6M No. 4782 and UP ET44AH No. 2635:

Third in this set of five locomotives and condemned to forever be a trailing unit, MRL 4306 enters Cherokee Yard under threatening weather.
