Bachmann EZ Mate coupler "specs"
« on: April 14, 2026, 09:21:22 PM »

Greetings all,
I am in search of the specs on the above coupler. Specifically, between the center of the mounting hole and the end of the knuckle. A friend has a few Sunset HO SP 2-8-0s with removable "dummy" knuckle couplers. These may fit the bill for a working front coupler that will "play well" with a standard Kadee coupler. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance....

Those "boxing glove" couplers are butt ugly. Why not just install a Kadee coupler?

Different spring or mounting method?

If he's using an N scale Bachmann coupler on an HO locomotive, it might actually be close to the right size.

That Bachmann N scale coupler is horribly oversize, maybe even for H0 scale, but it is probably close in size  to standard Kadee H0 (also oversize for the scale) couplers.  Since I don't own any H0 Kadee couplers I'm not sure how easily the Bachmann coupler will mate with them.

The Bachmann boxing glove is a slightly scaled down HO scale Kadee overscale head design. They just cloned the kadee and shrunk it a little bit!

Conventional N scale couplers are all so massively overscale they have no issues mating with HO (overscale!) couplers.

A conventional #5 with a Bachmann N scale. Note the identical head design!

A #158 "Scale" (its NOT scale, its still overscale as well) with a Bachmann N scale boxing glove. Way closer in size....

Bachmann boxing gloves come in at least two shank lengths, and a NEM 355 pocket version too. Of the standard shanks I have lying around, one is 3.5 MM from coupler back to hole center, the other is 4.5 MM. Hole is ~2mm ID. Shank is ~1.2 mm thick.

Turbowhiz,
Thanks for the pics and specs on what you had. That's a good starting point, appreciate it!

Peteski,
There is not (AFAIK) a Kadee coupler that will fit the coupler pocket of that Sunset Brass 2-8-0. Not to mention, that the
dummy brass knuckle coupler from the factory is secured to the box via a screw through the top of the box into JUST the
shank of the factory coupler.

One thing to watch out for is the durability of those boxing gloves when operating them with Kadee HO couplers to make sure they don't fracture

Wow!  Good to see that someone found a use for these ugly things!!  (Ugly on N scale equipment, I mean!)

Curious to see the final result on these H0 models!  (And… if you need any more, I’m happy to contribute!!)

TurboWhiz,
Would you say that the two examples shown are the "short" and "medium" shank length? Do you have a shank "thickness" (top to bottom) measurement?
Also, perhaps a measurement (width) across the centering "whiskers" near the hole?

Jimbo,
Just wondering what you may have? The medium and long shank versions may work well.

Thank you all for your replies, much appreciated!!
