Looking for recommendations for an 8x12 speaker please.

Thanks.

Edit: context: in my Atlas Shay I used a 9x16 but it was really tight and I think something has shifted and is rubbing. Planning to go to a smaller speaker when I open it up to see what’s happening.

Craig.

Hmmm, I had been getting the Soberton 433-1130-ND but now it says it is obsolete at Digikey.

The page for the 433-1130-ND recommends an alternative that is 8x13mm....

https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/soberton-inc/SP-1308/25661507

Edit: Oh, their recommendation is 6 Ohms

A 6-ohm speaker will work fine with ESU Loksound decoders.  Pretty sure they will be fine with Soundtraxx, too, although you might want to double-check their specs.

The new Soberton 6x13 has better specs than the old 6x12.  Doubt it would be audible, but you never know.

Be careful when using small speaker with less than 8 ohm impedance. With the lower impedance the audio amp will be able to push more wattage to them (beyond the speaker's ratings).  Be careful when setting the master volume level in the decoder.

Hi I use OWS speakers of various sizes.  I have 3 different sizes in my stash now.  I get them from DigiKey.  About a buck each (probably more with the tariffs).  I have used 8x12, 9x16, 11x15 mm depending on the space available.  I print my own backcases- lost of different designs on my TinkerCad site.  You may need to open an account to see the files (it is free).

I used a Loksound decoder so it can handle the 6 ohm impedance. Interesting though that in the description they say it’s 8ohm, but the specs say 6 ohm.

Thanks everyone.

I wasn't worried about blowing up the amp but the speaker itself. Small speakers are usually rated 1W or less and with 6 ohms the amp can push more wattage to the speaker than if it was an 8 ohm speaker.

I prefer a lower volume anyway so I’m not too concerned about blowing it up.

I would be interested to see your designs. What is the username to search for?
